Print of original artwork, ‘Pūmotomoto’.
This work dipicts a kōngahungahu (unborn baby, infant) held within the kōpū (womb), while a pūmotomoto descends to recite whakapapa to the kōngahungahu. The circular form represents the kōpū as a whare tangata, a sacred space of creation.
The pūmotomoto is a taonga puoro (traditional Māori instrument) traditionally played over the stomach of a pregnant wahine, and later over the fontanelle of the newborn baby. Through sound and vibration, whakapapa and mauri are instilled into the tamaiti. The word ‘pūmotomoto’ can also mean the fontanelle.
Printed on A4 308gsm 100% cotton rag paper.
